Why was my credit card declined?

A credit card may be declined for many reasons, such as:

  • The card doesn’t have enough available credit, or the credit limit has been reached
  • Pending transactions have lowered your available credit, but haven’t been applied to your current balance
  • Card details or PIN were entered incorrectly
  • The account is behind on payments
  • New or replacement card has yet to be activated
  • Card has been closed, cancelled, or is expired
  • The card is locked, or has been temporarily blocked (for example, you may have reported your card as lost or stolen, or there has been unusual purchasing activity detected)

To review your account details in the app:

  1. From the home screen, select your credit card account
  2. The next screen will display your current balance, available credit, and pending transactions
  3. You can tap View more details in the Statement details section to view your most recent payment

For support with online or in-store declines, connect with Scotia chat and type in the phrase “declined transaction.”
